I've been singing this song 'round the house since my university days, and finally decided to record it. The Decemberists made such a fantastically eerie lullaby from a real piece of Ireland's bloody history.

I wanted to tell the perspective of the slighted girl who it was written for, and how she twists her ex-love's words back at him in a curse. She was ready to let bygones be bygones, but after hearing the petty song he wrote for her, snapped back. Hopefully now he'll learn to never again scorn a witch.
